Application Checklist

1. Eligibility

Determine your eligibility by reading all of the admissions requirements for Audiology or Speech-Language Pathology. Ensure you meet all the requirements, including whether your undergraduate coursework satisfies the minimum prerequisites, before continuing with your application.

2. Online Application Form and Fee

Complete the online application through the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. There is an application fee, and you will need a credit card to apply. Please make sure you have included everything mentioned below.

3. Transcripts

For the initial application, you will normally scan and upload digital files (.pdf) of official documents in the online application system from all post-secondary institutions you have attended, excluding UBC. Ensure that the uploaded transcripts retail the legibility of the originals.

  • If you are offered admission, you will be required to send in one copy of each of your official academic history documents. Official documents are normally sent to:

  • If any transcripts are not in English, an official translation must be provided (excluding French transcripts from a Canadian institution).
  • If you are still attending university at the time of application, order your most recent transcript showing your courses in progress. When you have completed your courses and all grades have been posted, order two more official transcripts. 
  • If you are submitting transcripts from a university outside of Canada or the United States, please follow the procedures for submission of international transcripts

4. References

Contact three (3) individuals, well in advance, who can provide references for you, according to the guidelines below. During the online application process, you will be asked to provide your referees’ email addresses. Once you have submitted your application, the online system will send your referees instructions for completing and uploading their references electronically.

Guidelines for References:

  • A total of three (3) references as described below are required. If more than 3 references are uploaded, the additional reference letter(s) will be removed.
    • A minimum of one (1), and maximum of two (2), references must be from professors who taught you in a university course, preferably in the last two years of your studies. 
    • A maximum of one (1) reference may be from a professor who supervised you as a research assistant or research volunteer 
    • A maximum of one (1) reference may be from a clinician or other professional who has supervised you as a volunteer, or an employer for whom you have worked, who can attest to your potential as a future clinician. 
  • Example sets of 3 references: 
    • 1 teaching professor, 1 research professor, 1 clinician 
    • 2 teaching professors, 1 research professor 
    • 2 teaching professors, 1 clinician 

5. Written Documents

Applicants must provide the documents described below:

  1. Letter of intent: a statement of up to 500 words (typed, double-spaced) indicating your reasons for wishing to study Audiology or Speech-Language Pathology, the aspects of the field that are of particular interest, clinical and/or research questions that you wish to investigate, etc. 
  2. Observations: a list with the names of at least one Audiologist AND at least one Speech-Language Pathologist whom you have observed in clinical practice and/or met with to discuss the profession. The list should be written at the bottom of your letter of intent. 
  3. Resume or curriculum vitae: an up-to-date resume or CV, including dates (month/year). 

6. Residency

The majority of the seats in the MSc Audiology and the MSc Speech-Language Pathology programs must be allocated to residents of BC, Yukon, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut.  

  • BC Residents must provide a scanned copy of the front and back of their valid BC Services Card (what is this?).  
  • Residents of Yukon, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut must provide a scanned copy of the front and back of the equivalent of a BC Services Card.  
  • The scanned document must be included as the last page of the written Letter of Intent.  

7. English Language Proficiency

If you are a non-native English speaker, and you do not have at least four years of continuous post-secondary education in an English-speaking university, you must provide proof of proficiency in English by meeting the following two requirements: 

  1. Upload a copy of your official test scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS tests, ensuring that you meet the minimum stated individual component scoresAND the overall score for admission to our program, as detailed on our English Competency page.
  2. Provide the School with a five to ten-minute recording of your speech. This speech sample may be on any topic, as long as it is neither read nor recited. An interview may follow. You should submit your recording to the School by e-mail to inquiry@audiospeech.ubc.ca as an attached electronic audio file (e.g., MP3). 

Students who are re-applying to the program will need to complete a new application, including submission of updated documents, as described in the Application Checklist.
