Special Olympics BC held their annual Healthy Athlete event last Saturday, for which the School of Audiology & Speech Sciences ran the Healthy Hearing program. This is only the second year Healthy Hearing has been included in the many health promotion stations at the event. Over 150 athletes attended, along with their coaches and families.
Running our program were Sharon Adelman and UBC students from both our Audiology and Speech programs, as well as Clinical Faculty members Darlene Hicks, Mark Hansen, Henry Lam and Allison Love, and Industrial Audiometric Technicians Steve Polinksy and Norm Carriere. We screened hearing and made recommendations for over 80 athletes, and serviced several hearing aids.
Working with athletes in this program was challenging, rewarding, and fun! We plan to meet many others from all over BC when we attend the Special Olympics Provincial Games in Langley in July.
