Respecting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (REDI) Mission Statement
At the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences (SASS), we are committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment that celebrates diversity. Our mission is to cultivate a community that empowers every individual to learn and contribute to the field of communication science. We embrace the unique contributions each person brings, including their race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, ability, socioeconomic status, modes of communication, cultural background, and lived experiences.
SASS integrates principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion into our program, from recruitment, admissions, hiring, curriculum, teaching, service, and clinical practice to our research and community engagement. By doing so, we aim to prepare our students to become compassionate, culturally competent professionals who can effectively serve diverse populations and advocate for social justice within and beyond our field.
Our commitment is reflected in the values from UBC’s Faculty of Medicine’s Strategic Plan:
Respect: Regard felt or shown towards different people, ideas and actions.
Integrity: The quality of being honest, ethical and truthful.
Compassion: The act of showing kindness and empathy to others.
Collaboration: Working together with an individual or group of people towards achieving a common goal by sharing ideas, skills and actions.
Equity: Presence of fair and just processes that promote access to opportunities by providing support based on individual and group needs.
