Participants Needed for Research on Breathing and Swallowing

We are looking for participants to take part in a study on breathing and swallowing coordination. This study is being conducted at the University of British Columbia’s Swallowing Innovations Lab under the supervision of Dr. Stacey Skoretz (sskoretz@audiospeech.ubc.ca) and has undergone ethics review.

Who can participate?

– Healthy adults

– 18 years of age or older

– Able to communicate fluently in English (written and oral)

– Without a prior history of swallowing disorders, radiotherapy or surgery for head and neck cancer, neurological and/or neurodegenerative disease, cardiac conditions, respiratory diseases, bleeding disorders, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory disorders, post-viral conditions, currently or potentially pregnant, and/or anxiety with medical procedures.

What’s involved?

You will have measurements taken of your hand grip and pinch strength, tongue and lip endurance and strength, lung volumes, breathing movements, and swallowing function as obtained by a camera through your nose and muscle signals on your neck.

Your participation is entirely voluntary and would take approximately one hour. Remuneration will be provided for your participation.
