Assessing multilingual children: A collaborative approach towards local norms
Andrea A.N. MacLeod, PhD, Professor
Communication Sciences & Disorders, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine
University of Alberta
For some children, becoming bilingual is a necessity since the language spoken in the home is not the language used in school. A subset of these children have difficulties acquiring language and require additional support to succeed academically. In collaboration with speech-language pathologists in the schools, we developed an integrated knowledge transfer approach to study children from an ecosystemic framework towards collecting local norms. This presentation will focus on the results from 110 kindergarten children in Montréal who did not speak the language of school at home. An exploration of measures to capture strengths and challenges within this group will be presented.
