TITLE:
New tool, new lens: Assessing student competencies with the new Canadian Assessment of Clinical Competence/Appréciation de la Compétence Clinique du Canada

OVERVIEW: The evaluation of SLP and Audiology student performance during placements has long been conducted using a quantitative scale covering skills in professional and interpersonal skills, assessment, treatment and communication skills. The shift to competency-based education standards has necessitated revising the tools for placement evaluation. In 2014 clinical coordinators from all twelve Canadian SLP and Audiology programs were entrusted to develop a new evaluation tool based on the Canadian Curriculum Standards for Audiology and Speech-language Pathology. In 2023, this tool was piloted in French and English with clinical educators across Canada, with the plan to adopt as the new standard for placement evaluation. This session will provide an introduction to this new evaluation, and its formative approach for supporting clinical educators and students in the shared endeavour of clinical training. This session is appropriate for faculty, current clinical faculty and educators, and clinicians interested in being mentors.
